Perth's Groundwater Replenishment Trial

Water Corporation

Groundwater plays a vital role in supplying Perth's drinking water needs. As rainfall levels continue to decline and our groundwater resources are impacted, sustainable groundwater use is becoming more challenging.

The Water Corporation has a strategy to secure Perth's water needs which includes developing new sources, increasing recycling and reducing use.

Groundwater replenishment involves further treating secondary treated wastewater to drinking water quality and recharging it to groundwater. It could play an essential part in securing Perth's groundwater future. The Water Corporation is conducting a Trial to see if groundwater replenishment could be a feasible option for Perth. Recharge commenced in November 2010 and will continue until the end of 2012.

Twelve months since recharge began, the results of the Trial are promising. If done correctly, the Water Corporation is becoming increasingly confident that groundwater replenishment could play a safe and sustainable role in securing Perth's groundwater supplies. But don't take our word for it – decide for yourself.

Engaging with the community about water recycling is an important element of the Trial, so it is vital we keep the community informed on its progress and gather valuable feedback about water recycling.

We encourage you to join in the conversation and let us know what you think about groundwater replenishment and the role water recycling can play in securing Perth's groundwater future.

Water Corporation have just released its ten year plan for drought-proofing Perth - Water Forever - Whatever the Weather.

The objectives of the plan include:
1. Transferring our groundwater abstraction to the deeper aquifers
2. Groundwater replenishment

Each year, we conduct a survey of general community members to determine concerns and support for groundwater replenishment from both an informed and uninformed position. Annual survey results from 2011 indicate 67 per cent support for recycled water becoming part of Perth's drinking water supply with 12 per cent of respondents unsure.
